As a cyclist, you can get over a short rain shower in summer. If it rains for longer periods and/or the temperatures are cool, you need a reliable rain jacket. In the following test, I present three rain jackets that I have used. This test report is a supplement to the test report on lightweight rain jackets with a small pack size (see test for: Lightweight rain jackets with a small pack size for cycling). Unlike the lightweight rain jackets, the focus is not on pack size but on rain protection. For me, each of the jackets has its justification and a special feature that sets it apart from other jackets. All three jackets are available for both men and women.

SANTINI VEGA MULTI Jacke

https://www.santinicycling.com/
The Santini VEGA MULTI jacket is made from waterproof Powershield Pro by POLARTEC® with a 5000 mm water column. The microporous membrane wicks excess heat and vapor to the outside. The jacket is fully heat-sealed. There is a waterproof pocket that can be closed with a zipper. The jacket is not only waterproof in accordance with the DIN standard, but also provides warmth, which can be important on longer rides in the rain. There is also a waterproof stretch hood, which is packed into the jacket collar and can be easily removed. It is designed to be worn over a helmet. The jacket is not suitable for warm summer temperatures. At the same time, the pack size is medium and cannot be stowed in a back pocket in large sizes. The jacket is not intended for such use, but for use – even without rain – in cold to moderately warm temperatures. The extended back is a big plus. Reflective details increase visibility.

MAAP Atmos Jacke

The Maap Atmos Jacket is the lightest packable rain jacket in the test (110 g). It is made from breathable 2-way stretch Pertex® Shield fabric that does not restrict movement on the bike. The minimalist construction can be folded up so that it fits effortlessly into any pocket. It offers a waterproof rating of 20,000 mm water column, which provides reliable protection against rain in persistent and heavy rain. In terms of pack size, it belongs to the group of lightweight rain jackets with a small pack size (see test for: Lightweight rain jackets with a small pack size for bikes). One weakness is the short collar, which does not fit perfectly and lets too much air into the neck area in cold temperatures. In moderately warm to warm temperatures, however, this is sometimes an advantage to prevent overheating. The breathability of this jacket is very good. Another weak point is the short back, which does not protect the lower area from moisture. The jacket is best used in changeable showery weather with short, sometimes heavy rain phases and moderately warm temperatures. The jacket is rather unsuitable for longer rides in the rain, even if the water column can keep out large amounts of rain. Warm summer days are an exception. The two-way zipper also helps to regulate the temperature.

Sportful FIANDRE PRO W JACKET

The Sportful Fiandre Pro Jacket is made from Polartec® Neoshell® fabric with a 10,000 mm water column. The minimal taped seams provide protection while allowing breathability. The jacket is extremely stretchy. It is well thought out. The sleeves fit snugly but are stretchy and do not cut in. An extension is sewn into the neck to provide reliable protection from water and wind. The back is longer and keeps water out. The jacket has three back pockets and is comfortable to wear when it’s not raining thanks to its high breathability.
